Sklar has discovered and coached thousands of young performers, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Mischa Barton and Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon.
“Someday you may decide to move to New York or LA and decide that this is real, not just a fantasy,” he told the students.
“And you can.”
Yet the question that he posed to the dancers over and over again throughout his nearly 90-minute talk was how they can separate themselves from the rest of the dancers, actors and musicians trying to make it in Hollywood…

Today (Saturday), scrapbookers from across the region will pack up their supplies and convene at the Elmira Curling Club to help raise funds for dancers at Encore Dance Studio in Elmira and to collect much-needed food for the local food bank. Organizers hope to see some 50 scrapbook enthusiasts out in for their second annual event.
“Last year was our first time, and this year we’re way more efficient at it,” laughed Christa Uttley, who has spent the past year organizing the event with co-coordinator Ann Jobes.
Their first fundraiser saw some 30 people out and raised about $200 to help offset some of the costs of the dance studio. The group also collected about 200 pounds of food and they hope to improve on those numbers their second time around.

Students at Elmira’s Encore Dance Studio began their competitive season last week with a dance showcase on Feb. 26 and their first competition – the Bedazzled competition – being held at the River Run Centre in Guelph Mar. 5.
The competition group, lead by the studio’s new owner Chrystal Mazzotta, will feature dancers from ages eight to 18, who are set to compete in four events this season. Showcasing everything from traditional tap and ballet to the funkier jazz and hip-hop, Mazzotta is excited to be entering her tenth year as an instructor in competition.
“They show a lot of enthusiasm and energy on stage,” she said. “I think they’re going to do extremely well.”
The team won first place in the group performance category at last year’s Bedazzled competition, but neither the kids nor Mazzotta seem concerned with how they will place this year…
